Betrayal
I’ve been ripped by the unkind cut of duplicity. The man I thought of as a mentor and a friend is a perfidious louse. Though as a lover he has no equal, as an artist he is a snake.
Though famous throughout Europe, conceptual artist and intellectual hoodlum David Schoffman has saw fitĀ to swipe one of my drawings. In his latest piece, 400 DRAWINGS, a whimsical prance that highlights the intersection of e-trade and art, David has offered one of MY sketches for the pitiable sum of $25.
Perhaps I should be flattered to be included in this splendid portfolio of Schoffman’s works on paper. I suppose it means that he thinks my piece can hold its own. Maybe he just got confused and forgot it was mine, so consistent is its quality with his. The work in this new piece is nothing short of spectacular. Few people draw with David’s level of commitment and energy. But still … I’m pretty upset.
In any event, David plans to gradually unveil 400 drawings online and sell each one for twenty-five bucks. It’s a fabulous send-up on contemporary art’s fixation on its own commodification as well as being a tour-de-force of draftsmanship and ingenuity.
I actually bought 4 drawings myself.
Still, he can be such a scoundrel!
